Findley Webster: Pink Hot Sugar

Leave it to the British to come up with album titles that mark a fine line between sexual connotation and obscure artistic expression. Irrespective of the motivation behind Findley Webster's naming criteria, she certainly makes her mark with her latest work, "Pink Hot Sugar."

Though Webster's style definitely does not pertain to my typical rock'n'roll preference, she managed to catch and maintain my interest throughout her extremely well-written piece of art. With outstanding vocal harmonies, unique instrumentation, and consistent rhythm lines, it's no wonder.

"Pink Hot Sugar", like any well-thought out album provides variation for the listener. With tracks jumping between dance floor hits reminscent of Madonna in the early days, and gentle acoustic songs such as my personal favourite, "Mandolin Rain", Findley Webster proves that she is a multi-faceted artist with a diverse range of influences.

Within a industry that continues to borrow from the talents of artists gone by, Webster's commitment to 80s inspired music will no doubt help her attain success. Picture Madonna or Sinead O'Conner armed with the occasional lightly distorted guitar chord, and a team of perfectly pitched backup singers, and you get Findley Webster.

One concern that arose while I was listening to this album was her ability to pull this off live. Seeing as the music is so heavily laden with vocal harmonies, I fear that it would lack presence without them. As she is marketing herself as solo artist, I'm curious to know whether or not she tours with a backing band. For her sake, I hope that she does so that listeners are able to hear her music at its full potential.

For folks who enjoy acts such as The Cranberries, Joydrop, Natalie Imbruglia, Poe, The Cardigans, or the like, check out Findley Webster, she's definitely got a lot to offer.
